This is an important question – one that is often overlooked and taken for granted. When you are hiring a wedding DJ, more often than not you are not talking directly to whoever is going to play at your wedding. The best in the business do not work directly with customers, they are employed by larger wedding planner agencies that take care of the minor things and let the DJs do what they do best: play music. Due to this, you may be talking to a DJ agency when you are in the process of hiring someone to take care of the music at your wedding. You need to make sure to get contact numbers and check all the wedding DJ websites for pricing, in order to select who is going to be a part of the happiest day of your life just to make sure everything is perfect.
Once you made sure you are speaking to the DJ who is going to be playing at your wedding, you need to start asking the important questions. The obvious choice to start with is their experience. When it comes to such an important moment in your life, you want no amateurs taking care of business. Make sure you know how long has the wedding DJ been in the business and that he has been playing music professionally for a long time. Weddings are supposed to be fun for everyone involved, but they take a lot of work. Work that an amateur might not be able to pull off.
Here is an interesting caveat when it comes to experience. A person might have 10, 20 years of experience in the DJ entertainment business. But he may have no experience at weddings. A wedding is an entirely different game and it’s not the same as clubs or private events. There is a special look and feel around weddings and the wrong DJ might not be able to do things the proper way. This question is just as important as the previous one. You might find a veteran DJ and think you did a good job. But he might be an amateur when it comes to weddings.
When you are talking about your wedding day, everything needs to be about your wedding. You and your partner will dedicate the entire day to it. Your guests will do the same. And you need to expect your wedding DJ to follow the same behavior as well. If it was any other event, multiple jobs in one day might not hinder a DJ’s performance. But a wedding is a long, tiring endeavor. Everyone needs to be performing at their peak when it comes to the best day of your life.
A good DJ knows how to handle the music played at your party. A great wedding DJ knows how to manage the party. And the latter is the kind of DJ you need for your wedding. Remember: your wedding day is a celebration! And celebrations need a master of ceremonies (MC). You need to know if your DJ can handle -and whether he has experience or not- working as an MC.
Even though the DJ is in charge of all things related to music, this day is not about him, it’s about you and your significant other. The DJ will probably have an idea about what he is going to play and how to time it correctly. But that does not mean you cannot choose songs that are important for you and your partner. The first song you heard as a couple, the first song you danced to or simply “your song” are really important pieces in a wedding’s playlist. A great DJ will be thrilled to include them in their playlist – and know the right moment to play them as well.
This is a question that might be unrelated to music and weddings, but it’s nevertheless an important question to ask. How your soon-to-be DJ will answer is going to demonstrate a lot about his personality and how he handles himself in unexpected scenarios. DJs are probably not expecting this question -just as how he might not expect a problem during your wedding- and how the DJ will answer an unexpected question will show you how he will deal with unexpected scenarios. And you will learn more about your future DJ, as well.
You should let your DJ know you are willing to help as much as it’s needed. You are trying to have the best wedding you can, and the DJ needs to know you want to help him to make that happen. Perhaps the DJ will need a few songs from you or will need to ask you if you want fun games to be arranged for the party, amongst other things. Let your DJ know you are as compromised to have the best wedding possible and that he can ask for anything needed to make the workload easier – and better.
Once the music stops, the party is over. Everyone knows this, your DJ included. When you are planning your wedding, you will be guessing how long the party is going to last. But you might miss the mark, and find yourself a couple of hours short. To avoid any inconveniences, make sure your DJ is available for a couple of extra hours after the time is up and ask how much are the extra hours are going to cost. You don’t have to pay just yet, but have the money ready and the DJ available. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
Even though it’s probably not going to happen, the DJ needs to have a backup plan in case something happens and he can’t attend your wedding. Make sure you are not without a DJ at your wedding no matter what and ask for your DJ’s backup plans. This is a must, plan ahead.
